In this demonstration the bicycle drive wheel is composed of two plastic disks. One of these disks is stationary and contains a series of circular “pick up” coils located along the perimeter of the disk. The output of these pick up coils is routed to the light bulbs located in the seat area. The second disk is free to move when the bicycle pedal is rotated. The second disk contains a series of circular permanent magnets, which pass over the stationary coils thereby generating a current and powering the light bulbs. The three light bulbs can be turned on separately and be used to show how much power different light bulbs require.
