The disk is initially spun, but quickly starts spooling (spinning and rolling). The contact point between the mirrored base and the disk is small, which leads to very little friction between the two. As the disk is spooling, it’s center of gravity starts decreasing, converting its initial potential energy into kinetic energy. As the kinetic energy increases, so does the frequency of the spin.
