The interferometer measures small variations in distance between the mirrors and the beam splitter in the center. A light beam is split by the beam splitter and reflected off the two mirrors. When the beams recombine, small differences in the path length correspond to interference patterns in light projected onto a wall or sheet of paper behind the instrument.
